When you think of working out at a gym with a trainer, what is the first thing that comes to your mind?
Yoga pants? Tons of confusing equipment? A buff 20-something year old trainer? Muscles popping out everywhere? Repetitive exercises that are difficult to integrate into every day life? Strict regimens that you may or may not stick to? Expensive gear that you don’t have available in your home?
Well, throw ALL of that out! Oftentimes, here at CustomFitt, we are asked what makes us different? And we are here to tell you: those stereotypical things you have become accustomed to expecting from the big box gyms….we are not that!
When you first come into CustomFitt, we don’t start by showing you our equipment. We start by talking to YOU. We find out your goals in life, the things you used to be able to do that maybe have become harder in recent years, your history of injuries, any pains you may be experiencing and any underlying health concerns. We look at your posture, gait, balance, strength, and muscular imbalances. We talk about your lifestyle, the things you enjoy doing, your nutritional habits, and the things you would like to be able to do.
Our goal here is not to bulk you up and make you the strongest person in the room. Our goal is to give you exercise strategies that incorporate basic physical therapy, functional fitness and corrective fitness in order to provide you with a more active and empowering lifestyle. We want to help you see beyond the scope of physical therapy and medical diagnoses to the life you can lead in spite of that.
One such success story of our comprehensive approach to fitness comes from this month’s spotlight client, Tim Corder. Tim came to see us in March this year. When he came through the door, trainer Laura almost cried because of how tight and immoveable he was, but she was confident we could help him.
He came to us following a very difficult year in 2020. Tim was diagnosed with cancer and underwent chemotherapy at which point he also experienced a silent heart attack. During a training session in September, Tim shared with us that his cardiologist was amazed at the difference in his health since February/March. His doctor informed him that he didn’t want to perform certain tests at that time because he figured Tim was near the end. After picking up her jaw, Laura proceeded to ask him what else his cardiologist said during his recent visit. Tim informed her that he was so impressed with Tim’s dramatic health swing in six months!
After dealing with treatment for cancer, Tim was almost frozen throughout his pelvic area and was seeing a physical therapist hoping it would help with his back and leg pain. Frustrated, and feeling no difference after many sessions, he came to us after receiving a direct mail piece for sciatica pain.
Here it is, October, and Tim is healthier, stronger and pain free! We asked his wife Heather what she thinks of everything, and she was so excited to see his progress. She told us that he was strong as an ox, just like he used to be. The most beautiful part of it all, in addition to Tim being so much better, is what Heather told us. She told me that Tim’s daughter Phoebe came home in July and said she had her dad back. (There were tears for sure…).
